Sports Day & MOHI Dinner

While our time doing VBS came to an end, the ministry moved forward. We spent the day with 120 8th grade students playing American football and European football! The Kenyan 8th graders just completed an intense nation-wide exam, so this was a great way for them to release some energy! We brought several footballs with us and the students seemed to enjoy throwing & catching the ball, and learning a few NFL plays. As the Kenyans competed in a soccer tournament, they invited a few of our team members to join their team. It was so good to see!

After lunch we were invited to play in an exhibition match - 8 of our players versus 8 of their coaches. After two 10-minute halves, The score was tied 1-1. We went into penalty kicks, each team getting three kicks. And we won the penalty kicks 2-1!! Unbeknownst to us, Dennis, the Director of Sports for MOHI, had medals for the winner of the match! 

Our amazing afternoon was only matched by our celebration dinner! What an incredible surprise to walk into our dining hall and see it decorated with all kinds of colorful representations of Kenya! Our amazing chef put together an array of Kenyan dishes, that were outstandingly delicious! We were able to learn about Kenyan culture and how they prepare traditional meals. Most of our students went out of their comfort zone and tried eating fish heads and goat intestines! And they liked it! Our evening ended with a celebratory dance, and once again it was the end to a perfect day!

You're all continued to be covered in prayer. Also...not going to lie...I was a little jealous that I couldn't be there participating in the handstand fun!!! :)

More VBS and Home Visits

 At the midpoint of most mission trips the team can face a number of challenges. It’s not uncommon for teams to face trials including homesickness, lethargy, personality conflicts, physical illness, or unforeseen seemingly insurmountable problems. With four days to go I have to praise God the students of Team Kenya have avoided all of that. Even more so, these students are being intentionally relational and sacrificial. Today was more proof.  We returned to Kariobangi for Day 2 of VBS and home visits. I won’t belabor all the details of VBS (see previous post) only to add that it’s debatable as to which group had the most energy - I would suggest it was a 5-way tie!  After lunch we dived into 10 groups of three and partnered with two of MOHI’s social workers to do home visits. Final VBS and Celebration

For our final VBS, we switched up the teams.  People who had done sports were now doing dance, people who have done games were now doing storytelling, people who had done storytelling we’re now doing music. How fun it was to see everyone step up and serve the beautiful children yet one more day!  We enjoyed one last home visit in the community and were told that in the past three days our students had visited 50 homes!  When we returned from our home visits we were brought into the main meeting room where Valley Christian students became the honored guests of Hope School Kariobangi!
